The Midwest Ketamine Center is led by Dr. Vikas Patel, a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician, and veteran of the U.S. Navy. During his military career, he saw the devastating effects of depression, PTSD, and chronic pain, and has since vowed to make treatment accessible for those suffering from such conditions. On the day of each infusion, you will need someone to accompany you to your appointment and drive you home as the ketamine will leave you a little tired. Upon arrival, Midwest Ketamine Center will pretreat you with nausea medication if necessary. Infusions are given in private rooms, lasting about 45 minutes for those treating mood disorders, while for pain disorders, the process can be several hours. Most effects of the medicine wear off within minutes after the infusion, but patients can feel more tired than usual for a few hours after the infusion. Ketamine is generally well-tolerated, but if any side effects are encountered such as visual disturbances or elevated blood pressure, the clinic’s staff will quickly give IV medications to counteract them. Patients typically receive a series of 6 infusions over the course of approximately 2 weeks for mood disorders. Single booster infusions can be scheduled to achieve symptom relief again.
